optimistic moderately so at this point that something will get done. and of course, president obama sort of continuing his public campaign to pressure congress, not only republicans, but also, democrats who have expressed skepticism about this deal and not getting enough in new revenues. the president saying, look, this is not a perfect deal, not grand bargain, the big deal they had initially hoping for and working on but it is a deal nonetheless and will prevent at least part of the fiscal cliff set to go in to effect in a matter of hours now. >> mike, we talk a lot here about the sequester, the income tax rates for the wealthy and other issues that need to be resolved or one on the table. one that's not on the table, the payroll tax extension is just gone. unemployment insurance extension looks like it's part of this. and medicare dock fix. you have any sense of two other things that obama's been looking for here? one is an extension of the expansion of the refundable tax credits of stimulus in 2009. these are things pushing for. if that's part of it and obama looking for at least some in

on thursday, president obama signed an executive order that ends a pay freeze for congress and federal workers that is. as our march this coming here, federal employees will see 1/2% to 1% pay increase and get this, 535 members of congress will also get a raise. so, federal workers, 2 million of them already earn more than the rest of us, they get more. and congress, totally failing to do its job, will also get a raise. about 900 bucks each. do they deserve it? according to the latest rasmussen poll you say, oh, no, scott rasmussen joins us now. all right, scott, i've seen the numbers, 5% think that congress is doing a good or excellent job. that's it? >> that's it. 69% say they're doing a poor job and stuart, i know this is going to be hard to believe, i think those numbers are going to get worse. stuart: really? >> yeah, the reason i say that is we have all of this talk about the fiscal cliff negotiations, that are going to eliminate this middle class tax hike, but the fact is, payroll taxes are going up. if you make $50,000 a year, you're going to pay a thousand more in taxe

federal spending cuts begin to kick in. the payroll tax holiday enacted under president obama will expire. the alternative minimum tax kicks in and several tax deductions will also expire. nbc's danielle leigh is on capitol hill with the latest on the negotiation. danielle, what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning. there's been progress and at 11:00 a.m. this morning the senate is going to get back to work. when they do they will not have a lot of time to come up with a deal to avoid those spending cuts and tax increase. both sides are still divided but just before calling it quits yesterday democratic leader harry reid said he hoped to have an announcement in the morning when the senate gets back network. where are they divided? they are divided at what salary taxes should increase but there was progress on taxes for the wealthiest of americans and avoiding the inheritance increases and they are grateful that republicans have given up on demands for cuts to social security at least for now. now this progress has not come easy. democrats have accused republicans of being too su

made obama's victory possible. i mean, i think there was -- no one was talking about the sort of numbers that showed up for obama. no one was predicting the diversity of the vote. no one was predicting that sort of the republican strategy for securing a romney victory would come to grief so kind of spectacularly. i mean, i'm telling you. even the communities who came out to vote, i think, were shocked by their own numbers and by their own power. i mean, when you look at the cuban community in florida, a community that has historically voted super conservative and suddenly see an entirely new generation voting, and you see those numbers that they put up for obama. it was extraordinary. and i think that a lot of folks have very poor sense of what's happening in this country on the ground. i mean, they're kind of all the way up here, whether it's age, class, institutional divisions. and they don't really have a real kind of panoramic or even a deep view of the real sort of granular shifts that have occurred in this country, that have been occurring. >> if you took that grand narrati
